Preah Vihear Temple

The Temple Preah Vihear is situated a top of a 625-meter cliff of the Dangrek Mountain, in Choam Ksan district, Preah Vihear province. This temple was started to build during the reign of King Yashovarman I (889-910 C.E.), then continued by other kings until its completion in the reign of King Suyravarman II (1113-1150 C.E.), dedicated to Hindu god Shiva in his manifestations as the mountain gods Sikharesvara and Bhadresvara. Running from south to the north cliff for about 800m, this temple consists of five Gopuras, connected by causeways (Gopura V was evidently the starting point for pilgrims who climbed up via ancient staircases alongside which lie two water reservoirs built with sandstone embankments to collect rainwater from the southern slope. The Preah Vihear temple was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 7 July 2008 and is managed by the National Authority for Preah Vihear (NAPV).
