This group of Linga

This group of Linga temples on a terrace is one of the most intriguing elements of the site. Four Linga temples lie on a north-south- axis, perfectly perpendicular to Prasat Thom, separated by a large ceremonial square water tank built of sandstone. Prasat Sralau is today considered to be a chapel hospital constructed during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the 13th century. Based on its alignment and symmetrical position, it is thought that this temple was constructed on an old foundation of a fifth previous Linga temple. The decoration of Prasat Balang Cheung expresses exceptional grandeur through its elaborate doorjambs, lintels and colonettes, as well as a colossal Linga made of a single monolithic stone placed on a highly ornate pedestal held by lion facing in the eight cardinal and ordinal directions. It is believed that these temples were intentionally built without any roof to allow the rainwater to be sanctified by flowing over their massive Lingas into the ceremonial square tank in front, and that this terrace of temples represented the four sacred rivers of Indian myth.
