GOPURA IV

Gopura IV was built on sandstone terrace arranged on natural bedrock in a cruciform shape with a sandstone blind wall at the southern side, serving to screen the higher sanctuaries. The reliefs on pediment and lintel depict significant Hindu deities, notably Krishna killing Naga Kaliya (Naga with six heads) on the lintel of the eastern doorway of this Gopura depict the mythical scene of the churning of the ocean milk and Vishnu reclining on a Naga Ananta in the midst of the ocean, representing the creation of the cosmic world. Between Gopura IV and III is a causeway measuring 150m long bordered by 82 stone posts in the shape of lotus, and earthen walls connected the two Gopuras to provide a scared calm space for pilgrims.
